We are planning a trip for the beginning of October and we love to go snorkeling & diving. We prefer to have snorkeling off the beach! any Ideas on a great spot to go to?
Not sure about Bali, but for Thailand I can tell you a little.
All the dive sites are in the far south of Thailand.
The main islands are Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand.
On the other side of the coast you have Koh Phuket and several other areas along the coast.
The best diving in the Gulf is certainly around Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, some excellent dives to be had around there. Forget Samui, the coastline is wrecked from over development and zero planning. Samui is good for the hotel or resort, you can get speedboats out to the other island's dive sites.
On the other side you can dive the islands around the Andaman Sea, just go to Phuket and arrange dives from there. Andaman seas dive sites are almost untouched, virgin unpolluted waters, crystal clear. Perhaps better than the Gulf and Koh Tao/Phangan.
For snorkeling off the beach you'd do well on Koh Tao or any island in the Andaman sea off from Phuket. Phuket itself is like Samui, the coastal environment is messed up by over development.

Go south to Trang or Satun and stay on one of the small islands there.
Koh Tao (off Chumpon) is getting crowded due to excellent scuba. Nearby Koh Nang Yuan is expensive but awesome.
Or go to Trat (near Cambodia) and visit Koh Maak or Koh Kut.
